Spray On Urushi “Sakigake”
Traditionally, applying Urushi using a brush has been the standard method. However, when trying to spray regular brush-use Urushi, issues such as dripping or shrinking often arise, making the process technically difficult. The demand for Spray-On Urushi increased to address these challenges.
Historically, Spray-On Urushi used synthetic resin paints, but this had drawbacks. The resin added reduced the hardness of the coating after drying, making it more susceptible to scratches and showing visible signs of “thinning” over time.
Sakigake (魁) is a spray Urushi designed to minimize these issues. It has been adopted in various places and applications, including the Kyoto Guest House furnishings (see photos 1, 2, and 3).

Like conventional products, Sakigake contains polyurethane resin to prevent shrinking and dripping. Among the various polyurethane resins available, we have tested compatibility with Urushi and selected the resin that is added in the smallest possible quantity, ensuring that it does not interfere with Urushi’s hardening while providing a synergistic effect.
What sets our product apart from others is the amount of synthetic resin added to the Urushi. Our product contains 90-95% Urushi and 5-10% polyurethane resin. Rather than increasing the resin content to improve work efficiency and reduce cost, we use the minimum amount to maximise the performance of the Urushi while improving workability and efficiency.
Except for the matte finish, Sakigake is based on Kōrin Urushi, and the coating hardness after application is similar to that of brush-applied Urushi. This allows for the Roshiro (polishing of glossy finishes), which was previously difficult with conventional spray Urushi.

To use Sakigake, mix the base material (90-95% Urushi, 5-10% polyurethane resin) in a ratio of 8 parts to 1 part additive (polyurethane resin) (excluding pigment-containing versions) and dilute with the dedicated thinner before spraying. Unlike typical spray Urushi, it is rare for Sakigake to allow adjustment of the drying time from ultra-fast to ultra-slow.
The formulation has been designed to meet JIS standards and Butsudan Fair Trade regulations, ensuring compliance with the requirements for “Urushi” or “Urushi coated” products.
